The first major strife arrived at the small settlement when King Kenneth attacked the village and granted the rights and the castle to a warrior named Barr. Later the Gospatricks of Northumbria were the superiors and it was they who brought major religious communities. Dunbar was also the scene of two major battles, in 1296 and 1350. In more recent times, the town grew in to a mojor holiday destination and, following a lull in that industry, it has made a comeback. Dunbar's High Street is the most atmospheric in the county and serves the needs of a thribing community and, of course, many thousands of visitors each year. Restaurants, cafes, inns and hotels provide for all, of every budget and the various attractions make every visit worthwhile. Dunbar awaits with open arms and a warm welcome ![]() The Esk flowing under the John Rennie built Town Bridge. The church on the right is now a museum and history centre. Musselburgh see volume two Musselburgh lays claim to being Scotland's oldest settlement being in existence long before the arrival of the Roman Legions in the early 1st century. Much history evolves around the wonderful town which was given the title of Honestas in the 14th. century in thanks for the people's down to earth goodwill and honesty. Many skirmishes and one major battle have taken place here but Musselburgh also lays claim to a great fishing and other industrial greatness. Musselburgh Links is the oldest multi sporting arena in the world and still retains great association with horse racing, golf, athletics, archery and golf indeed, Musselburgh i now recognised as the home of golf and the oldest golfing layout in the world. The Royal Musselburgh (now at Prestongrange Park) still plays for its Old Club Cup, the oldest golfing trophy still being played for and the Honourable Company of Archers compete every year for the Musselburgh Silver Arrow, the oldest sporting trophy in the world still being competed for. |
